Philadelphia’s Next Great Night Out Starts With a Stand Up Set

Philadelphia has never struggled to find places to drink. Or places to eat. Or places to stay out later than originally intended. But what Philly has struggled with is finding places that blend all of those things together in a way that feels easy.

That's why Claude's Comedy Club & Bar, expected to open this summer at 1123 South Broad Street, feels like one of the more interesting nightlife openings on the horizon.

Because while it's technically a comedy club, that description doesn't really tell the full story. Claude's is aiming to become the kind of place where people stop in whether they have tickets to a show or not. Somewhere that functions as a neighborhood bar, but also a casual food spot, and a comedy venue all at the same time.

Instead of building a traditional comedy club where guests show up 15 minutes before a performance and leave immediately afterward, the venue is designed around the idea of creating an entire night out.

A Comedy Club for People Who Don't Normally Go to Comedy Clubs

A lot of people like the idea of comedy clubs more than they actually like going to them, as some feel intimidating and others might feel overly touristy or too much effort. However, Claude's seems determined to avoid all of that.

The planned space will be smaller and more intimate than many traditional comedy venues, creating the type of room where audiences feel connected to the performance instead of watching from the back of a giant showroom. For the comedians, that's often where the best material lands. For audiences, it means a more personal experience and a much greater chance of discovering performers before they're selling out larger venues.

And finally, for people who have never stepped foot inside a comedy club, it could become the place that changes their mind.

Claude's Comedy Club & Bar isn't the only exciting addition to Philadelphia's nightlife scene. Check out our feature on Bastet, the new nightclub bringing a fresh vibe to Spring Garden. It's another sign that Philly nightlife is having a very interesting year.
